Sasayama Traditional Buildings Preservation District

Sasayama Traditional Buildings Preservation District covers an area of approximately 40 hectares, consisting of the ruins of Sasayama Castle, a national historic site, and the surrounding samurai and merchant towns.

In the old samurai town located on the west side of the castle, a group of samurai residences with thatched roofs remain along Okachimachi Street, one of which are open to the public as the “Samurai Residence Anma Family Historical Museum”.

The old merchant town on the east side of the castle is a great place to walk around and see a series of gabled merchant houses built from the late Edo period to the Taisho period. Here you will also find Japanese-style hotels, restaurants, and general merchandise stores.
