Sasayama Castle

Sasayama Castle is located in TambaSasayama City, and is said to have been built on a small hill called “Sasayama”.

The castle was built in 1609 by Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu to hold the western part of Japan. The construction was completed in only 6 months with Todo Takatora and Ikeda Terumasa in charge.

The first lord of Sasayama Castle was Matsudaira Yasushige, but after several changes, Aoyama Tadatomo came to Sasayama from Kameyama in 1748, and the castle remained in the Aoyama clan until the Meiji Restoration.

The Sasayama Castle is designated as a National Historic Site and is also one of the “100 Great Castles of Japan”. The castle building called “Daishoin” was destroyed by fire, but restored in 2000 and is open to the public as a municipal museum.
