Senkoji Temple

Senkoji Temple stands halfway up Senkoji Mountain. It was founded by Kobo Daishi (founder of Shingon esoteric Buddhism), in the first year of the Daido Period (806 AD) and was rebuilt by Minamoto no Mitsunaka (famous samurai of tha Heian period).

The temple is the 10th temple of the 33 pilgrimage sites of Western Japan . The principal image of Senju-Kannon, which is said to be beneficial for fire prevention, is a hidden Buddha statue, but  it is displayed to the public every 33 years.

The main hall was built in 1686 during the Edo period, and is a suspended structure that extends into the air, offering an excellent view.
