Fukuchiyama Castle

Fukuchiyama Castle is located in Naiki, Fukuchiyama City.

Originally, there was a Yokoyama Castle here, but in 1579, Akechi Mitsuhide, who had conquered Tamba Province by order of Oda Nobunaga, renamed the castle “Fukuchiyama Castle”, rebuilt the castle and opened a castle town.

Mitsuhide placed Akechi Hidemitsu in charge of the castle, but shortly after, in 1582, the Honnoji Incident occurred, and both Akechi Mitsuhide and Hidemitsu died. Thereafter, the lord of the castle changed several times, and from 1669, in the early Edo period, the Kutsuki clan was established as the lord of the castle.

Fukuchiyama Castle was abandoned in the Meiji era, but the stone walls from the time of its construction still remain, and the main keep, which was rebuilt in 1986 with funds raised through the “One Tile Campaign” by citizens, is used as a museum of local history.

It is noteworthy that the stone walls include “diversion stones” such as stone-built Hokyointo (a Japanese box-shaped pagoda), stone Buddhas, and stone mortars.
