Byakugoji Temple

Byakugoji Temple is a Tendai Sect temple located in Tamba City. It is said to have been founded in 705 by Hodo hermit who came from India. The principal image of the temple is Yakushi Ruriko Nyorai (Medicine Buddha).

In the Middle Ages, the temple received the devotion of Akamatsu Sadanori, the load of the Kasukabe Manor, and became one of the largest temples in Tamba Province. A stone Hokyointo (a Japanese box-shaped pagoda) erected by Akamatsu Sadanori remains near the Yakushi-do Hall, and is designated as Tangible Cultural Property of Hyogo Prefecture. A wooden drum bridge and other structures are also designated as Cultural Assets by Tamba City.

Byakugoji Temple is well known for its autumn foliage, but is also famous for its “9-feet-arch wisteria”, which attracts many tourists from mid-April to mid-May during the “9-feet-arch Wisteria Festival”.
