Naritasan Shinshoji Temple

Naritasan Shinshoji Temple is the head temple of the Chizan school of the Shingon sect, located in Narita City, Chiba Prefecture.

It is said that in the early Heian period, in the 3rd year of Tengyo (940), the monk Kancho performed a prayer to defeate Taira no Masakado and founded this temple with a statue of Fudo Myo-o brought from Kyoto as its principal image.

Kabuki actor Ichikawa Danjuro the 1st, became a devotee to Naritasan Shinshoji Temple and took the name “Narita-ya”, which led to frequent visits by the common people of Edo.

It is still a popular spot that attracts as many as 3 million people during the New Year’s visit.
