Kannon-ji Temple is a Shingon sect Buddhist temple located in Fukuchiyama City, Kyoto Prefecture. It was founded in 720 by Hodo, an itinerant hermit, who carved and enshrined a statue of Senju-Kannon (Eleven-headed Thousand-armed Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva).
The original temple complex was destroyed by fire in 1576 during Akechi Mitsuhide’s attack. However, it was later rebuilt and has since been designated as a Kyoto Prefectural Cultural Property.
The temple is renowned for its collection of ancient artifacts, including a wooden statue of Fudo Myo-o (Acala) from the Heian period (794-1185) that has been designated as a National Important Cultural Property. Kannon-ji Temple is also known for its beautiful gardens, which feature over 10,000 hydrangea plants that bloom in vibrant colors during rainy season.
