Matsumoto Castle

Matsumoto Castle, a national treasure that stands in the city center of Matsumoto City, is known throughout the country as one of the Twelve Existing Castle Towers.

Although it is a flat castle, the castle tower is an imposing 6-story building that is strongly protected by a triple moat, and the outer walls are painted black lacquer.

You can see a spectacular view of the Northern Japanese Alps from the top of the castle tower.

Matsumoto Shrine, located adjacent to the castle, is the shrine where the ancestors of the Toda clan, the feudal lord, were enshrined during the Edo period.

In the precincts, there are stone lanterns dedicated by senior retainers of the Toda clan.
